Some districts use the devices to ensure school celebrations aren't drunken events. But is it necessary?

With prom and high school graduation season in full swing, the issue of student drinking is often a hot topic, with schools offering programs and presentations on the dangers of drinking and the use of drugs.

Some districts include the use of breathlyzer devices to ensure that events aren't marred by drunken behavior. But are they needed? Does the possibility of being tested for alcohol level deter students from drinking before or during big celebrations?
