Taking it to the Streets: Freshman Class and Sayville Ford Team Up

Test drive fundraiser raises close to $3,000.

The freshman class of Sayville High School took to the streets – literally – with their fundraising efforts thanks to the help of and Ford Motor Company. Via a national program called "Ford's Give One 4 UR School," Sayville Ford helped the freshman class by donating $20 for every test drive taken from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 20. In addition to the donation to the school, Sayville Ford raffled off a Gateway LT20 Netbook for one event attendee.

"Ford Motor Company recognizes that school budgets are tight and that schools are looking for new ways to raise money for extra-curricular activities," a statement from Sayville Ford said. "Ford's Give One 4 UR School Program helps local dealers connect with the community."

The funds raised will help to support the freshman class with their extra-curricular activities. Melanie Oswalt, an employee at Sayville Ford and Sayville graduate, is the one who brought the program to the attention of Doug Shaw, one of the freshman advisors. With the event coming to a close, Shaw said there were about 150 test drives that took place, equaling approximately $3,000 in funds raised. "Many friends, family and senior class members were down here to show their support," Shaw said.

Sayville Ford provided the facilities, Ford vehicles, staff, food, music as well as special offers and prizes to attendees. The Sayville freshmen assisted with test drive regulations, Ford Sync demonstrations and the barbeque and bake sale. "Sayville Ford has been so cooperative," Shaw said. "They are great working with the kids, and really supportive of our efforts."

This is the second time the high school has joined forces with Sayville Ford for its fundraising efforts. According to Shaw, last year the event raised almost $10,000, which was used to support the senior class and several other student organizations.
