Sylvan Students Embark on Walk to the West Coast

Mileage Club program provides teachable moments and helps keep kids healthy.

Third- through fifth-grade students at Sylvan Avenue Elementary School in
Bayport are working to walk the thousands of miles it would take to travel from their school to sunny California as they participate in the building’s Mileage Club.

The program, which runs outdoors during recess time, has been warmly received by the students who are walking many miles each day.

The students are responsible for charting their mileage and submitting the
results to the school’s physical education teachers. For every five miles that the walkers log, they receive a plastic “foot” tag to proudly affix to their shoelaces. The results of the school’s collective mileage are regularly charted on a bulletin board outside the cafeteria. In addition to the total miles completed to date, the board also displays interesting facts about the current city and state the student-walkers have reached.
