Sylvan Elementary's "Little Doctors" Volunteer at Blood Drive

This weekly column will spotlight the Parent-Teacher Associations in the district with articles, interviews and photographs.

A Parent-Teacher Association is an organization where parents, teachers and administrators all work together for the benefit of the students. With a PTA for every school in the Bayport-Blue Point School District, it can be tough to keep track of all the events. This new weekly column provides residents with information on PTA happenings, and highlights the efforts of the organization to enhance the community through events that are fun, educational and charitable.

On Wednesday, 35 parents came to the gym to donate blood to Long Island Blood Services.  All of the blood donated stays on Long Island and is used within 48 hours.  Members of the Sylvan Avenue PTA volunteered their time to organize and work at the blood drive.

Principal of Sylvan Avenue, Alane Dugan, said they  publicized the drive at a recent parent/student event as a way to get parents to donate blood. "Dr. Annunziato asked that the schools get involved in the blood drive. We tried to connect the blood drive with the Jump Rope for Heart event that was held a few weeks ago," she said.

When a blood drive happens at a school, Long Island Blood Services sends a representative to teach the children about blood and donating.  Then the children can volunteer to be a part of the Little Doctors Program.  At Sylvan the Little Doctors were fifth grade students that handed out paperwork and snacks to the blood donors.

Here is what is planned for the upcoming week.
