Sylvan Elementary Students Get a Lesson in Fire Safety

Bayport Fire Department volunteers give young residents interactive experience.

Sylvan Avenue Elementary school kindergartners learned about the importance of fire safety during a comprehensive and interactive program at the Bayport Fire Department.

Local firefighters spoke with the students about the different pieces of equipment at the firehouse, invited the students to take an up-close look at the trucks and even allowed each student to take a turn handling a working fire hose.

Students also learned about the importance of developing family emergency evacuation plans, checking fire alarms and the proper ways to react in the case of an emergency.

To demonstrate how they can fight fires in even the tallest buildings, the firefighters hoisted the grade-level’s teachers high into the air using the 100-foot ladder on top of a fire truck.
