Sayville Teacher to Participate in NASA Research Experience

Cindy Dwyer was selected to participate in a summer research experience.

Cindy Dwyer, Sayville School District’s Elementary Enrichment Facilitator, was selected to participate in a summer research experience at Wallops Island, Va. for a week in July through the NASA Explorer Schools Teacher Recognition Program.

While participating in the coastal observation workshop, Dwyer will use satellite data, hands-on shipboard measurements and laboratory analysis to learn about why coastal oceans are important in understanding global climate. The workshop is designed to familiarize teachers with the science and research techniques used by NASA to study the coastal oceans, ocean color and Earth’s biosphere from space. She will get the opportunity to board research vessels and perform some of the same research techniques used by NASA scientists. All of her travel expenses for the program will be covered.

Dwyer teaches SEED & Challenge in the three elementary buildings, and grade 3-6 Mathletes. She looks forward to bringing the experience home to share with her students in the 2011-2012 school year.
