Sayville Student Honored for Scholarship, Athletic Excellence

Matt Iovino is a leader on the field and an academic in the classroom.

For a second time this season, Sayville has a Capital One/News12 Long Island Scholar Athlete. Matt Iovino was recognized by Capital One and News12 Long Island.

Coach Rob Hoss nominated Iovino, an All-Division lineman and state champion, for this award based upon his athleticism, scholarship, and musical versatility. In addition to his athletic prowess, Iovino is academically accomplished, has an unweighted average of 94, scored 2130 on the SATs and achieved a perfect score in the math section.

As a multi-talented musician, he also sings, plays ukulele, piano, guitar, cello, clarinet, qualified two times for All-State in voice and composition, and has appeared in school musicals since Middle School. When he graduates, Iovino hopes to pursue his studies in chemical engineering at either MIT or Yale.

News 12, in conjunction with Capital One Bank, recognizes students from Long Island as Capital One/News12 Scholar Athletes in weekly broadcasts.

Each student athlete is recognized for his or her exceptional achievement in the classroom and on the athletic field. The winner receives a certificate and a $1,000 scholarship from Capital One Bank. Students are recommended for this award by their head coach or school administrator
