Sayville Library News: Artists on Display; Programs Galore

October is chockful of programs and events sponsored by the library.

Local libraries are a tremendous community resource for everyone from toddlers and young reading programs to free museum pass opportunities and reading clubs for the adult book lover.

To help keep residents up on local library activities Patch offers up a glimpse at programs and events taking place during October at the Sayville Library.

On Display: This month's feature in the display case is "Kids in the Kitchen Italian Style" provided by the Sgt. John Basilone Lodge #2442, Order Sons & Daughters of Italy.

Art Gallery: Long Islnd water colorsits as arranged by artist Paul Padavano.

Children's Programs: The over dozen programs include Baby Games, Tiny Tots, Toddler Fun, Art with Joanne (for grades 1st through 4th) and "Snappy Happy Halloween" where children are invited to wear their costumes.

Teen Central: There's a Wii Mario Cart tournament, a book chat, the chance to make a candy corn magent and a program for young babysitters.

For the Adults: Hone lifesaving skills with the Porject Lifesve program, a chance to learn how to use an iPad, a program on eating for energy and two film & dessert events. There are also day and evening book discussions to join and a slew of computer education courses.

And so the taxpayer is once again asked to give more to an already out of control and bloatedRead More system. Every year the school districts on Long Island receive increases of millions of dollars to their budgets, and still they want to bleed the taxpayer for more. As two income families struggle to pay exorbitant tax bills, we’re asked to pay even more? We’ll here’s a novel idea, how about if the teachers union’s began demanding less? This early retirement baloney must stop, salaries should be capped, administrators and their staffs must be cut by at least eighty percent. In addition, educators and staff should have to pay for their own medical and retirement plans just as the rest of us must. Here on Long Island, families are suffering and sacrificing, and many are being forced to leave due to taxes which are out of control. It is time for educators to cease hiding behind children with threats of decreased student programs, and to make an honest and realistic observation as to why things are as bad as they are. To blame parents for not paying enough into the system to support the schools is ludicrous. The real problem lies in a system which is self serving, and run by incompetents blind to the harm they are inflicting upon our children and families.
