Sayville Interact Club Holds Basketball Fundraiser

Student members of Interact Club organized the Second Annual Student vs. Faculty basketball game fundraiser for the Barefoot Foundation, which works to build schools in Colombia.

As the Rotary International’s service club for young people, ages 14 to 18, Sayville High’s Interact Club completes at least two community service projects, one of which furthers understanding and goodwill with international agencies. This year, they chose the “The Barefoot Foundation, a U.S. non-profit, non-governmental organization created by internationally acclaimed recording artist and humanitarian Shakira.” The Foundation website states, “The organization is devoted to ensuring that every child can exercise his or her basic right to a quality education. We aim to improve the education and quality of life for the millions of boys and girls denied the chance to fulfill their potential.”

Club advisors Stephanie Bricker and Matthew Nani have been assisting the students members with organizing Interact’s past efforts that include: Summer Fest, Fall Festival, Bake Sales, Spooky Walk, Food Drives for The Greater Sayville Food Pantry, Long Island Cares – Food Bank, Salvation Army Bell Ringing, Soup Drive for the Super Bowl, Achagua-Piapoco Indian Reservation Fundraising, International Awareness, Kristin’s Walk to the Water, and The Keith Nintzel Memorial 5K Run and Walk, Club members develop a network of friendships with local and overseas clubs. 

“All the money from Interact’s bake sales and other fundraisers throughout this year are going to Barefoot Foundation cause,” explained this year’s Club President Cathy Rico. “The Faculty vs. Students basketball game was a great success! Many teachers came out in their gym clothes to play their students in an intense game and we were able to raise $500 for our cause!”
