Sayville HS Student Wins NYS Flag Design Competition

Islip Town Supervisor Phil Nolan presents citation to Kiki Bustamante.

Islip Town Supervisor visited Sayville High School on Monday to present a citation to sophomore Kiona (Kiki) Bustamante.

Kiki's flag design was chosen to represent New York State in the National Youth Art Month celebration, sponsored by the Council for Art Education. Her flag will be displayed with the other winning state flags in Washington, D.C., during the month of March, which has been designated as Youth Art Month.

Sayville High School participated in the statewide competition. Teachers had their students submit designs and then the competition was narrowed down to one selection per teacher, said Julia Lange Shapiro, Kiki’s digital art design teacher and also chair of the Sayville art department.

“I was contacted by the council after submitting Kiki’s design and asked to provide a digital image for the competition," Lange Shapiro said.

The theme for the flag design competition is "Art Shapes Your World."  The Youth Art Month logo and state name were the only requirements for the design. This is the first year that New York State officially participated in the competition. New York State was divided into 10 regions for their submissions, and the contest was open to all schools within the state provided they are a member of the Council for Art Education, Lange Shapiro said.

Kiki did a digital design for her submission incorporating the New York City skyline using Adobe Illustrator. Lange Shapiro said it reproduced well for the flag.

“We were told to come up with things that could come to mind when you thought of New York; that’s how I came up with the idea of the skyline,” Kiki said.

She comes from a family of talented artists and would like to pursue a career in graphic arts.

Her flag will be displayed at the National Art Education Association Youth Art Month Museum at the NAEA Annual Convention in Seattle, Washington.  Youth Art Month is an annual observance each March to emphasize the value of Art education for all children and has been celebrated since 1961. The flag design competition is in its 25th year.

Kiki’s flag design will also be on display at the as part of the March celebration of artwork from all five of the schools.
