Sayville Elementary's Bike-to-School Event is a Hit

Sayville had perfect weather for the second annual, Cherry Avenue PTA sponsored Bike-to-School Day.

A great many of the students geared up and rode their bikes to school accompanied by their parents and friends.

As part of the National-Safe-Routes-to-School program, Bike-to-School Day has become another tradition at Cherry Avenue Elementary school.

“Cherry has been participating in the Walk-to-School programs for years,” PTA President  Marisa Milo explained. “We were so excited when they launched the Bike-to-School program last year.  Bike-to-School and Walk-to-School days are always popular at Cherry and a great collaboration between the PTA, Mrs. Fee (our physical education teacher), Dr. John Stimmel (our principal) and our community.”  

Practicing what was preached left a big impression on the students! “Dr. Stimmel, who has always fully supported these events at Cherry, spent the morning riding with students and greeting families,” Mrs. Milo continued. 

“The kids got a real kick of having their principal with his helmet and bicycle riding to school alongside them. We also had the support of the SCPD's fifth precinct COPE officers.  They had police officers on bicycles and in cars helping to keep our riders safe and the morning running smoothly.  And thanks to our Wellness Committee Chairperson, Jennifer Travaglia, who organizes these events on behalf of the PTA, Cherry also just won a new Saris Stadium bicycle rack from the National Center for Safe Routes to School program which we are hoping will arrive before our next Walk-to-School Day on June 5.”
