Sayville Elementary Proves it Has a Big Heart for Charity

Over $20,000 was raised for the American Heart Association by the Sayville School District's Lincoln Avenue elementary school students in Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grades—and they did it in ONE day!

The fundraising event, generally known as “Jump Rope For Heart,” was “much more than double-dutch” this year, thanks to physical education teacher and program leader, Elizabeth Bolger.

“This special event raises funds to support life-saving heart and stroke research and educational programs,” commented Beth Bolger, “and it provides a venue for authentic lessons in the circulatory system, exercise, and the dangers of smoking. I am so proud of our students!”  

Starting at 7:30 a.m., and with the assistance of twenty parent volunteers and twenty teachers, Lincoln students who participated this year maneuvered through eighteen challenging stations or activities.

In addition to the traditional jump rope, students engaged in team-building/cooperative games, climbed and swung from ropes, traversed mini-obstacles, enjoyed spinning plates, and exercised other heart-healthy activities.

“Certain students who raised more than $100 on-line,” added Lincoln Avenue Principal Dr. Michele Leblanc, “became eligible for the random draw to ‘pie’ a teacher! In a teacher’s absence, Mr. Votino, the parent of fifth grader Hailey, stepped up to the ‘plate.’” 

Punning aside, Dr. Leblanc also had high praise for the fundraising extravaganza—which put the fun in fundraising—as planned by Beth Bolger. “Coach Bolger provides a valuable service learning opportunity for our students, as well as a strong lesson in empathy.

This event is highly successful each year because of her meticulous planning, energy and creative talents.  I would like to thank the Sayville Community for their tremendous support of our children and this event.”
