Santa Makes Early Arrival at Prince of Peace

More than 350 people come out to have breakfast with St. Nick.

What better way to end your weekend than an up close and personal breakfast with Santa Claus? Prince of Peace School hosted more than 350 people at its annual Breakfast with Santa fundraiser on Dec. 5.

"We have been doing this event for more than 15 years," said Susan Connelly, one of the members of the committee. "It is one of the best loved events for us and the community. The biggest problem is having enough room to accommodate everyone who wants to come."

Since space is a concern, reservations are required for both of the two seatings. The eighth graders were in charge of keeping the kids busy, playing games around the perimeter of the gym and supervising crafts. There was storytime on the blanket in front of the Christmas tree and a big picture wall where children could write a message or draw a picture for Santa.

"This is a great kickoff to the holiday season," Connelly said. "Everything is organized and just flowing and all the kids are having a blast. The eighth graders are definitely helping to keep the kids engaged for the whole hour and a half."

Speaking of organized, the line for Santa was actually quite short, as the kids were busy with all the other fun activities. So many got to spend a few extra minutes with him as they had their picture taken, no doubt filling his ear with their Christmas wishlists. All the pictures were e-mailed to parents, so they could use the photo any way they liked.

Bagels, baked goods, and hot lattes were all available during breakfast, with many items homemade and donated by the parents. There was also a 50/50 raffle sold at the door and tickets were sold for a few baskets up for grabs. A portion of the funds raised from the breakfast went to the Parents Association, while other proceeds benefitted the eighth graders, such as latte sales.
