Cherry Avenue set their parent/child reading challenge at 20 minutes a day for five days a week. The children will hand in weekly time cards to attempt to reach a combined total of 200,000 minutes this year.

Dr. Stimmel, Cherry Avenue’s principal, started the kick-off festivities off with a wonderful story to set the stage for the rockin’ evening of books, fun and live music to follow.

The children then received passes to themed rooms throughout the school where teachers and staff volunteered as mystery readers for the evening.  In addition to the school staff, Sayville Superintendent Dr. Schartner and Deputy Superintendent Dr. Sulliven-Keck treated the students to some very entertaining stories.

After story time, the students returned to the cafetorium for a live concert by Nick Tangorra and his band, who brought great energy and excitement to the reading program. Kindergarteners through fifth graders were on their feet for the entire hour rockin’ with Nick and his band. It was a perfect start to Cherry¹s PARP program.
