PTA Planner - Sylvan PTA Reaches To Outer Space

Family Fun Night merges education and fantasy for an out of this world experience.

Sylvan Avenue PTA sent kids off to another galaxy during the December Family Fun Night's main attraction, The Space Road Show.

Trying to breathe new life into their events, the PTA switched things up in an attempt to bring in more families. PTA co-president Heidi Kiley looked on as Sylvan’s cafeteria filled up with children and their parents.

“It's a totally new format for us," she said. "This is a lot more educational and is well-attended.”

Another first: the PTA sold tickets in advance at a discounted price. A portion of every ticket went to help needy families within the Sylvan community for the holidays.

Families were greeted at the door by students handing out glow sticks as they entered the darkened cafeteria for The Space Road Show, just to get the "full effect" of being in outer space.

Joe Ladolcetta performed the hour long, multi-media, Nassau-Suffolk BOCES approved Space Road Show.

A Sayville science teacher for 33 years, Ladolcetta started this program just four years ago.  His plays the part by wearing a NASA jumpsuit during his presentation.

The show touched on the space-related topics, such as the Space Shuttle, moon phases, sun, plants, gravity and rockets.

Children learned how astronauts live in a space station; how difficult the simplest tasks, like brushing teeth and going to bed, are really hard without gravity.
