Schools

To the Book Fair and Beyond

Blue Point PTA twice yearly book fair fundraiser encourages youngsters to explore their reading choices.

A "flying saucer" greeted families as they entered Blue Point Elementary's Book Fair, where the outer space theme allowed for some out of this world fun.

Tables upon tables of new books, grouped by reading level, were set up for easy browsing and kids posed for a quick picture with the UFO before digging in.

The bi-annual book fair is one of the PTA's biggest fundraisers, according to the event chairperson, Laura Yannelli.

“It is all about books, promoting reading and having a good time," she said.

Besides buying books, the children had a chance to win a book by playing the alien ball toss game or guessing how many space objects were in a jar. Teachers make a wish list to build their classroom libraries with the help of generous families that purchase and donate the books.

Yannelli said this is the third year they have held the two-day event after school. “It's been very successful, it's great for parents that work, they get a chance to attend the book fair with their children.”
