Students at Bayport-Blue Point School District's three elementary schools can now enjoy new playgrounds.

In November, Dr. Anthony Annunziato, Superintendent of Schools in the Bayport-Blue Point School District, cut the final ceremonial ribbon to the last of three new elementary playgrounds in the district. The playground projects at Academy Street, Sylvan Avenue, and Blue Point Elementary Schools were funded through bond proceeds and monies raised by the Parents for Parks and Playgrounds committee.

Recognizing that the former playground equipment was outdated, the Board of Education saw the need to provide students with more current equipment and an expanded playground environment. The building principals, along with Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Glen Eschbach, conducted research, tested playgrounds across Suffolk County, and decided upon the design that the elementary students seemed to enjoy the most.

For approximately two months, TL Contracting Company of Oyster Bay worked to complete the three district playground projects. In some cases, the installation of new playground structures meant removing play structures that had been housed on the schools’ properties for over 20 years.

“This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the district,” said Eschbach. “Students for years to come will benefit from the consideration put into ensuring that this project came to fruition.”

In ceremonies attended by students, faculty, administration, members of the Board of Education, and school PTAs, students performed musical numbers and offered thanks to all who were involved in the completion of the projects. The ceremonies concluded with a ribbon-cutting and the opportunity for students to be the first to test out their new play equipment.

The district's Board of Education and administration, the Bayport-Blue Point Foundation, Parents for Parks and Playgrounds, and the school PTAs were all involved in this project.
