Local School Districts Close as Hurricane Sandy Approaches

Districts make announcement late Sunday afternoon.

The Bayport-Blue Point and Sayville School districts are closing school on Monday and Tuesday as a precaution to the impending Hurricane Sandy storm.

The announcements came through the districts' websites late Sunday afternoon.

The Sayville district released this short statement on its website:

Due to the severe weather predictions of Hurricane Sandy and storm surges, all of Sayville School District will be closed both Monday and Tuesday. Please be mindful of this state of emergency and stay safe as we weather through this storm.

And so the taxpayer is once again asked to give more to an already out of control and bloated…Read More system. Every year the school districts on Long Island receive increases of millions of dollars to their budgets, and still they want to bleed the taxpayer for more. As two income families struggle to pay exorbitant tax bills, we’re asked to pay even more? We’ll here’s a novel idea, how about if the teachers union’s began demanding less? This early retirement baloney must stop, salaries should be capped, administrators and their staffs must be cut by at least eighty percent. In addition, educators and staff should have to pay for their own medical and retirement plans just as the rest of us must. Here on Long Island, families are suffering and sacrificing, and many are being forced to leave due to taxes which are out of control. It is time for educators to cease hiding behind children with threats of decreased student programs, and to make an honest and realistic observation as to why things are as bad as they are. To blame parents for not paying enough into the system to support the schools is ludicrous. The real problem lies in a system which is self serving, and run by incompetents blind to the harm they are inflicting upon our children and families.
