In-class Field Trip Gives Bayport Students a View of China

Fourth graders at Academy Street Elementary learn about country's culture in social studies lesson.

Academy Street Elementary School third-grade students had the chance
to experience different aspects of the Chinese culture when they attended an in-house field trip called "Go China," presented by Patricia Shih.

As part of their social studies curriculum, the students have been engaged in learning about the country, in particular its geography, history and culture, making the hands-on, interactive presentation a fitting complement to their comprehensive study.

During the workshop, the students not only learned about the language,
location and art forms of China, but also had the chance to take a look at Ms. Shih's extensive collection of artifacts, including silk lotus shoes, puppets from a Chinese opera, instruments and clothing.

And so the taxpayer is once again asked to give more to an already out of control and bloatedRead More system. Every year the school districts on Long Island receive increases of millions of dollars to their budgets, and still they want to bleed the taxpayer for more. As two income families struggle to pay exorbitant tax bills, we’re asked to pay even more? We’ll here’s a novel idea, how about if the teachers union’s began demanding less? This early retirement baloney must stop, salaries should be capped, administrators and their staffs must be cut by at least eighty percent. In addition, educators and staff should have to pay for their own medical and retirement plans just as the rest of us must. Here on Long Island, families are suffering and sacrificing, and many are being forced to leave due to taxes which are out of control. It is time for educators to cease hiding behind children with threats of decreased student programs, and to make an honest and realistic observation as to why things are as bad as they are. To blame parents for not paying enough into the system to support the schools is ludicrous. The real problem lies in a system which is self serving, and run by incompetents blind to the harm they are inflicting upon our children and families.
