Gifted Students Inducted Into National Honor Society
Bayport-Blue Point NHS welcomes 25 new members for their service, scholarship, leadership and character.
The Bayport- Blue Point National Honor Society (NHS) welcomed 25 new members Monday night at its annual induction ceremony at the high school.
The NHS selects students each year who demonstrate four core characteristics: service, character, scholarship and leadership.
Donna Edgar, the NHS advisor, said the selected students rise above the mediocre in academics, but it is imperative that they show excellence outside of school as well. She said each student brought something unique and extraordinary to the district.

Principal Timothy Hearney outlined this in his speech. “This is not just an honor roll,” he said.
All inductees had to submit resumes listing their achievements and awards, while also writing an essay.

Superintendent of Schools Anthony Annunziato spoke of the new inductees and the current members with pride. “This is an unbelievable group of kids here,” he said. “I commend them for their academic achievements, but I praise them for their greatness of character.”
Inductees walked to their seats escorted by current members as some of their accomplishments were read aloud to show how those students go above and beyond. One new inductee, , not only excelled in the classroom, but she participated in a variety of activities, such as the Science Olympiad Team. Sarich garnered a silver medal as a part of that team at a recent competition in March. Sarich is also musically gifted as she was accepted into all-county SCMEA music festival.
Current members highlighted the privilege it is to be a part of such an elite society and reflected on what it has taught them.
Dakota Kann said she learned the importance of helping the community. “As a member of the National Honor Society, I’ve become more aware of community needs,” Kann said. “It’s truly been a privilege to be a part of a society that fulfills those needs.”
Hearney said that all members should not forget what got them into the honor society and what they learned from it. “I encourage these students to challenge themselves and to continue demonstrating the four core characteristics,” he said.
