Former Classmates Reminisce About '80s Hairstyles, Music and More at 20-Year Reunion

Bayport Blue-Point High School's Class of 1990 held their 20-year reunion at West Lake Inn on Saturday.

More than 120 former students from Bayport-Blue Point High School's Class of 1990 gathered at the site of the class' senior prom, West Lake Inn, on Saturday night for their 20-year reunion.

Alumni and their spouses traveled to the event from as far as Florida, Minnesota and London, England. To plan this event, organizers used facebook, craigslist and local advertising in newspapers to draw a crowd.  Organizer Jenny Cleary created a facebook poll to determine when to schedule the reunion.

The former classmates spoke about how their peers look now compared with their high school appearance ."I can't believe how much everyone has changed.  Some people haven't changed at all though," said Kelly Miller, who also organized the event.

"How great do we look?  I can't believe how great we look after all of these years," said Jennifer Beers, an internal auditor who now lives in Babylon Village.

The hairstyles and clothes of the '80s garnered numerous comments from the former classmates. "I had a lot of hair then, which I do not now," said Jason McCarthy, who attended the event with his wife, whom he met at Johnson and Wales Culinary School.

According to some in attendance, the highlight of the event was the photo montage of the class that Cleary compiled using Bayport-Blue Point High School yearbooks from 1985 to 1990. "We have a lot of '80s things to make fun of, like mullets and big hair," said Cleary.

Music from the '80s was the evening's standard.  Bayport-Blue Point Class of 1999 graduate, Garrett Rivers, served as disc jockey for the night, playing Madonna, David Bowie and A-Ha, among other bands.   Rivers didn't attend his recent 10 year reunion but said he plans to attend his 20-year.

Alumni also reminisced about topics other than music and hair, such as old crushes and yearbook award winners. Lisa Lucas, who now lives in Vermont, was the recipient of the "nicest eyes" award when she was a high school senior.  "It was nice because my boyfriend got nicest eyes too," she said.

Tim Healy, who won "most school spirit," told his wife Leah about the homecoming floats his class built at his parent's home from 1986 to 1990.  He said they built an Egyptian float, a 1950's float and a Superman float.

Tammy Santora, who is an elementary school teacher at Academy Street, said she is so fond of the community that she could never imagine leaving.  "I absolutely love it.  I would never go anywhere else."

Many of the alumni present had spent kindergarten to senior year of high school getting to know one another.  One alum compared the event to a family reunion.  "It's overwhelming.  It's really nice, almost like a family reunion," said Cara Vazquez, who now lives in Brookhaven Hamlet.
