Spring Break Educational Program

 

Each session is from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM April 18-April22.  The cost is $15.00 per child, per program.  This is appropriate for elementary aged school children.

Build-A-Fish - Fish have developed adaptations to protect themselves in their natural environment. Learn about some of these and then build your very own imaginary fish to thrive in an environment of your choosing.  

 

Tuesday, April 19

Secret Spies and Codes - Colonists living on Long Island helped General George Washington by sending him secret messages. Learn about these secret heroes and then work with different codes to compose some messages of your own!  

 

Wednesday, April 20 

Bird Watching and Bird Feeders - We will give a bird watching introduction and then use different identification tools to identify the birds living aorund the Museum's grounds. Then, the kids will be able to make their own bird feeder to hang in their own back yard. Please bring a cardboard milk carton.  

 

Thursday, April 21

Navigation and Time - Learn to use a compass for a scavenger hunt and then use the position of the sun in the sky to determine what time it is by building a sun clock.  

 

Friday, April 22

Whaling and Scrimshaw - Whaling was an important industry for Long Island and they used every part of the whale - even its bones and teeth! Make your own scrimshaw carving, just like the whalers did.
