International Walk to School Day was observed on Wednesday at Cherry Avenue School.
For a third year, the Cherry Avenue community has joined the fitness-awareness effort by walking or biking to school. The week's rainy weather parted in time to create a perfect day for this one-day event, which was part of the international movement now in its 13th year in more than 40 countries. According to the International Walk-to-School website, there were many goals achieved by this activity:
- The promotion of bicycling and walking to school provides an opportunity to address safety.
- Walking or biking to school protects the environment and your health.
- Free, convenient, enjoyable and does not require special equipment or training: Walking is a great way for adults and kids to be active. Walking and rolling to school also embodies two main goals of First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! campaign: to increase our kids' physical activity and to empower parents to make these kinds of healthy choices.
The Cherry Avenue Elementary School community said that they enjoyed the event so much that it has become a practice to schedule a second walk or bike to school day in the spring.
