Cherry Avenue Chorus Brings Holiday Cheer

Fourth and fifth graders sing in Holiday Concert at Sayville High School.

Big sounds came out of little bodies when fourth and fifth graders performed in the 2010 Cherry Avenue Winter Concert at the on December 1. The children cranked up the holiday spirit with festive Hanukkah and Christmas tunes.

Chorus director Kristi Woerner conducted both the fourth and fifth grade chorus, as well as the Select Chorus, which combined the talents of both grades. Decked out in black and white, the standard choral attire, all of the students blended together and put on a fun show for their listeners.

Festive fourth-graders kicked off the concert with their rendition of "Spin a Little Dreidl" which was followed by "Count your blessings." But it was "Blitzen's Boogie" that had the kids dancing up on the risers and the audience clapping along.

Singing another song about Santa's flying friends, the fifth graders whooped it up with "Run, Run, Reindeer." A medley of "Jingle Bells "and "Sleigh Ride" combined two famous holiday melodies. They also showed off their ability to sing in a round with the song "Shalom Chaverim."

The Select Chorus finished up the evening by performing two songs, "Snow is Falling Still" and "'Tis the Season" which were met with applause.

Certain chorus members entertained the auditorium by introducing each song, sometimes with a little prepared skit.

Gearing up for the big event filled the kids with a ton of excitement. For nine-year-old Eric Gustafson, who sang in the fourth grade chorus, he even went to sleep early the night before because he wanted the day of the concert to come as soon as possible.

"The kids worked really hard," Woerner said of her students. "They are such a fun bunch – they have a great time and still managed to get their work done."
