Book Fairs Fundraise for District PTAs; Brightens Day for Students

These events encourage students to read, raises money for PTAs and puts books on school library shelves.

Bayport-Blue Point students look forward to the book fairs the PTA brings to the district biannually, when the classrooms are set up like book stores for two days and the shelves are stocked with books for every reading level.

In addition to being a great activity for the kids, the fairs serve as a fundraiser for the district elementary and middle school PTA organizations and supply the classrooms and school libraries with new books.

Last week was Sylvan Avenue Elementary School’s book fair.  Kimberly Hickey, Sylvan’s PTA Recording Secretary said, “Through the book fairs we raise money for the school library to buy books and for the PTA to support programs and events like field day. The more books the students buy, the bigger the percentage we get back.”

Sylvan’s fall book fair allowed the school library to buy $400 worth of new books for the students. Hickey hopes this book fair raised the same amount.

The book fairs could not happen without the help of the PTA parents who volunteer their time. Children file into the classroom with their money and lists of what books they want to buy and PTA volunteers help the students find the perfect book.

With a PTA for every school in the Bayport-Blue Point School District, it can be tough to keep track of all the events. Here is what is planned for the upcoming week.

  • April 18-25 Spring Recess - School Closed
  • April 26 - School Resumes
  • April 27 - Blue Point Elementary School Staff Apprecition Day
  • April 27 - Blue Point Elmentary School Blood Drive

Since SEPTA will be electing officers at the April 28 meeting, they need 25 people to attend to make it offical.
