Blue Point Teen Attends United Nations Conference

Lilly Barone, a senior at St. John the Baptist, was a student representative at the conference on the 56th Commission of the Status of Women.

Two student representatives from St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School, seniors Lilly Barone from Blue Point and Krystal McLeod from Bay Shore, attended a conference at the United Nations. This conference on the 56th Commission of the Status of Women, focused on reforming the quality of life, education, and health care rights for rural women and girls.

Along with drafting a document of suggestions to help rural women that was read and presented to the U.N., these youth leaders also helped edit the current United Nations document on the rights of Women. The week culminated with a visit to the United Nations building in Manhattan and a Delegates Dinner at the Millennium Hotel. Among the many girls from across the globe, the girls met delegates and other NGO (Non-government organization) representatives that provided even further insight to this important topic.

Krystal and Lilly plan to continue their work with the U.N. and hope to return to the conference next year. Lilly and Krystal gained many insightful perspectives from this conference and learned to "take gratitude in the amenities you see as necessities, because others might find them to be luxuries.”
