Anyone arriving at Academy Street Elementary School on the day the fourth grade classes celebrated Colonial Day would think they had stepped back in time.
Dressed in traditional Colonial attire – bonnets and dresses for the girls and knickers and Colonial hats for the boys – the students spent an entire day recreating the time period they had been studying during their social studies classes.
“Today’s program is a fitting conclusion to our lessons on the Colonial time period,” said teacher Carrie Almskog. “From the moment they arrived at school – from greeting their teachers to addressing their classmates – the students experienced what it was like for children back in the 1700s.”
Students started the school day with a Colonial school morning, during which they reviewed rules and manners of students during the 1700s that they had to abide by throughout the day. They recited from an Academy Street primer and practiced subjects that were taught during the era by doing math lessons with chalk, reviewing their reading skills and practicing penmanship using a feathered pen and ink.
During the craft portion of the day, students stenciled, drew silhouettes and fashioned candles. They also made apple cobblers and played games such as “boot pitch” (removing one’s shoes and tossing them at objects with the goal of who could obtain the most points) and outdoor sack races. With the help of several parent volunteers, the classes also enjoyed a traditional Colonial luncheon.
