B-BP Mulls More Camera Use to Thwart Graffiti Activity

High school boy's bathroom is favorite graffiti artist spot.

The Bayport-Blue Point School District is considering installing additional security measures, such as video cameras, to help stem vandalism acts at the district’s five buildings though graffiti incidents are not as rampant this year as in past years.

A recent police blotter reported noted that the roof at Sylvan Avenue Elementary was the most recent target of a graffiti artist.

According to school officials there have been about six incidents between Sylvan, Academy Street Elementary and James Wilson Young Middle School this year.

The Blue Point Elementary School and the high school buildings have been immune from such activity so far, according to the district.

The high school’s boys bathroom, however, is an entirely different story. Graffiti in the restroom is almost a daily occurrence, according to officials.

While the district did not provide specific costs in cleaning up graffiti incidents there is the potential for additional spend as cleanup falls to the workload of full-time custodians.

In the case of vulgar or very explicit graffiti, which is removed immediately, the cleanup can prompt a need for overtime costs, according to the district.
