Bayport Students Partner Up on Literacy

The buddy reading program not only helps reading skills but makes reading fun.

In celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday and the national literacy movement Read Across America Day, Sylvan Avenue Elementary School fourth graders from Jaime Abran’s class and first graders from Christina Law’s class shared a few familiar stories together as book buddies.

Sporting oversized hats similar to that of Dr. Seuss’ famed Cat in the Hat, the students took turns reading aloud such favorites as “Green Eggs and Ham” and “Horton Hears a Who!” during the afternoon celebration.

In addition to the colorful hats they had made, each first-grader received a handybookmark fashioned by the fourth-graders at the end of the book buddies event. The partnering classes get together throughout the year to celebrate their commitment to becoming lifelong readers through a variety of literacy-based events.
