Bayport Students Participate in National Walk to School Day

Academy Elementary students took to the pavement earlier this month in walking to school.

Community members might have noticed a few less cars on the roads around Academy Elementary School in early October as the building’s students participated in the 2012 National Walk to School Day.

The annual event encourages students and their families to forgo traditional means of transportation and either walk or ride a bicycle to school.

In addition to the environmental benefits associated with the event, it has been known to promote physical activity as well as reinforce lessons on pedestrian and bicycling safety.

“Although we are largely a walking community, several students did mention that today was the first time they ever walked to school,” said Principal Kerry Vann. “The event was a great way for us to reinforce the importance of healthy living and wellness with our students. We look forward to participating in the program again and hope even more families are able to join us.”

This year’s walk was coordinated by the school’s health and safety committee.
