A Bayport Eagle Scout project at Bayport-Blue Point High School is nearly finished with just a few bricks left to be laid in place and a formal dedication ceremony to be held in October.
Chandler Varone's project is a outdoor student lunch area built in honor of Doug Monsell, a beloved teacher who passed away earlier this year after a valiant battle with liver disease. Varone is also raising funds for an educational foundation in honor of Monsell's two young daughters.
"It's almost finished, all the bricks Ineeded to get sold are sold. I surpassed my goal by about 40 bricks," Varone wrote in an email to Patch.
"I actually ran out of bricks to engrave so people can't buy anymore engraved ones but they can still donate," he stated.
The completed project will feature tables and benches, said Varone, who is a member of Life Scout Troop 329 and a 2012 graduate of B-BP High School.
Those interested in donating to the educational foundation can email Varone at cvarone10@aol.com.
Checks should be made payable to Troop 329 with the memo subject reading “Chandlers Eagle,” and mailed to 321 McConnell Avenue, Bayport, NY 11705. For more information Varone can be also reached at 631-707-3628.
