B-BP Students Prove Small Change Can Make a Big Difference

Academy Street Elementary students help raise funds for a worthy cause.

Students of Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point
School District recently attended an assembly in which a check in the amount of $283 was presented to Patricia Conway, a representative for the Friends of Karen charity.

The check reflected the amount of money collected by the students during the Small Change Drive held over the course of a month. This is the sixth year that the Peer Leaders group of Academy Street has invited students to participate in the Small Change program, and in that period of time, students have collected over $3,500 for Friends of Karen.

The charity is dedicated to providing emotional, financial and advocacy
support to children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. Friends of Karen has provided assistance to more than 4,800 critically ill children and their families over the past 33 years.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to do something kind to
help others and to recognize that they can make a big difference in a number of small ways,” remarked Rebecca Tilden, Peer Leader advisor.
