B-BP Students Learn Law Lessons in Fairytale Mock Trial

Fifth graders put Goldilocks on trial for trespassing and petit larceny.

Portraying a cast of characters typically found in the pages of classic
children’s stories, fifth-grade students at Sylvan Avenue Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District participated in a mock trial program in which the well-known fictional character Goldilocks was charged with trespassing in the second degree, criminal mischief and petit larceny for disrupting the family of the three bears.

This project was an extension of the fifth-grade curriculum about the legal system and the culmination of several in-class workshops run by program creator Glen Vogel.

As the famous story goes, a young girl named Goldilocks travels through
the home of the three bears sampling their food and disturbing – and in some
cases destroying – their property along the way.

During the mock trial, which put a twist on the familiar tale, the students played the roles of Goldilocks, prosecutors and defense attorneys, character witnesses, the three bears and witnesses for the prosecution, such as the Big Bad Wolf.

For the event, the school’s gym was turned into a replica courtroom, complete with a judge, bailiff and fourth-grade students acting as jurors. To make the trial realistic, students were introduced to courtroom language and learned how the court system functions.

In the end, Goldilocks was found guilty on several accounts and the trial
proved to be a valuable learning experience for all of the students involved.

And so the taxpayer is once again asked to give more to an already out of control and bloatedRead More system. Every year the school districts on Long Island receive increases of millions of dollars to their budgets, and still they want to bleed the taxpayer for more. As two income families struggle to pay exorbitant tax bills, we’re asked to pay even more? We’ll here’s a novel idea, how about if the teachers union’s began demanding less? This early retirement baloney must stop, salaries should be capped, administrators and their staffs must be cut by at least eighty percent. In addition, educators and staff should have to pay for their own medical and retirement plans just as the rest of us must. Here on Long Island, families are suffering and sacrificing, and many are being forced to leave due to taxes which are out of control. It is time for educators to cease hiding behind children with threats of decreased student programs, and to make an honest and realistic observation as to why things are as bad as they are. To blame parents for not paying enough into the system to support the schools is ludicrous. The real problem lies in a system which is self serving, and run by incompetents blind to the harm they are inflicting upon our children and families.
