James Wilson Young Middle School teacher Rochelle Petre, a district educator since 1988, was honored at Teacher of the Year at the recent Bayport-Blue Point School District's Superintendent's Conference Day.
Petre, who was nominated by her colleagues, has spent most of her career teaching sixth grade and is seen as a leader in the field.
"Ms. Petre helped to write the current sixth-grade science curriculum and has helped to train other teachers in the teaching of specific science content,” stated Interim Superintendent of Schools Neil Lederer. “She bends over backwards to help give other teachers whatever tools they need to reach their students. For her, everything is about what's good for students."
