The tassels were flipped, and it was time to do the traditional cap in the air moment when Senator Charles Schumer arrived at the Bayport-Blue Point graduation ceremony about 12:30 today.
He went to the podium, congratulated the Class of 2012 and then gave them a very special gift.
"I know the last thing you want right now is to hear another speech," he told the assembled students.
He then ripped his typed speech in half and wished them well on the next chapter of their lives.
The crowded applauded loudly, the graduates hooted and hollered and the caps went flying.
Patch will have full coverage of speeches, photos later today, Sunday and on Monday. So stayed tuned.
