B-BP District Extends Middle School Building Access

James Wilson Young middle schoolers can now use the library and cafeteria before the school day officially starts.

Bayport-Blue Point middle schoolers won’t be standing outside this winter if they arrive early as the district is opening the building to students starting at 7:30 a.m.

“I was concerned about how the students arrive at the school and having to wait outside. The school should be a welcoming place and this will let students get breakfast if needed, and some prep time before the school day starts,” said Interim Superintendent Neil Lederer.

The news was announced during the regular Board of Education meeting Tuesday night. Students will have access to the cafeteria and the library between 7:30 a.m. and the school day start time.

“We will have to add some extra staffing [supervision] during the timeframe,” said Lederer, adding “This will help change the affect of the building and prove beneficial for the students.”

He noted that the change was embraced and supported by district administrators.

“I commend Sue Haske [school principal] and Mrs. Flynn [interim superintendent of curriculum and instruction] for supporting this and having an open mind to it,” said Lederer.

The new building hours will go into effect October 22.
