B-BP Board Trustees Intend to Seek Re-Election

All three incumbents say they intend to run for another three-year term.

All three Bayport-Blue Point Board of Education trustees whose terms expire this year will be seeking re-election though the lone female incumbent said a firm commitment depends on getting spousal approval.

At Tuesday night’s BOE meeting Board President James March and Trustee Leonard Carmada stated they intend to run again. Both members have served over a decade on the board.

Trustee Molly Licalzi said she would like to run again but noted a caveat:  convincing her husband that it’s a good idea.

District residents interested in running for the three-year positions have until April 22 at 5 p.m. to file the required petition with the needed signatures.

The district BOE election is not an at-large election so candidates must choose a seat for election. That requirement extends to incumbents and incumbents can either run for their own seat or choose to run for another open seat.

As of press time district officials stated just under a half dozen petitions had been distributed.

Currently there are no limits on board service. A Patch poll conducted a year ago revealed that district residents support term limits for board members.

Of the 42 votes cast, 23 (54%) were in favor of instituting a two-term cap, which would be six years of service.

Eleven votes, representing 26% of the tally, favored no term limits and eight votes (19%) were cast in favor of limiting terms to four.
