Athletes, Students Recognized by Board of Education

Dozens receive citations for community service and athletic achivements,

The Board of Education recognized the outstanding community service and athletic accomplishments of Sayville’s students at a recent meeting, which was held at Lincoln Avenue Elementary School’s .

principal Tom Murray presented Board of Education citations for community service efforts. Receiving the Presidential Bronze Certificate (50 hours of community service) was: Julia Cameron; Frankie Ferrara; Christine Guinessey; Ricki Ifferte; Rowan Mahoney; Emma Patterson; Patrick Smith; and Anthony Vetere. The Presidential Silver Certificate for 75 hours of community service was awarded to: Megan Gunther; Tara Litvin; Jill Mediatore; Erin Murphy; Kayla Stockert; and Meghan Westman. For 100 hours of community service, the Presidential Gold Certificate was presented to: Kerry Barrett; McKenna Butler; Diane Ferretti; Sierra Grayor; Aneri Kinariwalla; Alyssa Lofaro; Amanda Minutello; Emily Nowlan; Shreeya Panigrahi; Tanner Russo; Emily Sneddon; Sydney Teplitz; and Angela Vetere.

Athletic director presented the awards to the three championship sports team. “This was a very memorable year for Sayville sports,” he said. “All of our varsity teams made the post season and all were scholar athlete teams. Fifty student athletes received post-season honors. This is a wonderful community and when you come out to a game, you know you are in Sayville.”

The were the League Champions, Suffolk County Champions, Long Island Champions, New York State Class A Champions and New York State Scholar Athlete Team. Next up was a presentation of “Holidays Around the World” by some of Lincoln Avenue’s first grade students. After their presentation, the board members got to try out the new E-instruction class tool, where students use a remote control to log in answers to the questions presented on-screen.

In other news, the 2011-2012 school calendar is complete and now includes two conference days in May so teachers can complete grading of the state assessment tests. “Teachers would typically lose a week of instruction to try to grade the English and Math exams,” said Superintendent . “This way it will be one full day to grade English and one day to grade Math. We don’t have to worry about the costs of substitute teachers, it saves money and it is better for instruction. It is much more efficient,and it’s better for the kids. We’ll give it a try for next year and see how it goes.”

Budget discussions will continue at the next Board of Education meeting on Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.
