Garbarino Wins 7th Assembly District Seat

Sayville Republican beats former Islip councilman in first-ever election bid.

In his first-ever political run Republican Sayville lawyer Andrew Garbarino has clearly defeated Democrat Christopher Bodkin to win the 7th Assembly District seat.

With three precincts left to report, Garbarino had 25,924 votes (57.28%) to Bodkin's 19,321 (42.69%).

Garbarino took an early lead out of the gate, gaining a 13% lead shortly after results began filing in and that lead then advanced to 15%.

Garbarino's additional party voting lines helped cement the win for 27-year-old and kept a Republican in the seat. Garbarino held the Conservative, Independence and Main Street ballot lines. He garnered 20,155 Republican votes, 4,272 Conservative Party votes, 1,277 Independence Party votes and 220 Main Street Party votes with 99 of 102 precincts reported.

The Assembly seat was held for six years by Republican Phil Boyle who decided to run for the 4th District Senate seat of Owen Johnson who is retiring.

Bodkin is a former Islip Town councilman and serves as a legislative aide to Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer William Lindsay.
