West Sayville Park Renamed in Life-Long Resident's Honor

Division Street Park is now known as Edwin Boogertman Memorial Park.

A small neighborhood park tucked within homes along Division Street in West Sayville is now known as the Edwin Boogertman Memorial Park in honor of the life-long community resident and former Islip Town official.

The Islip Town Board approved the name change at Tuesday's board meeting.

Boogertman, who served as the town tax receiver, joined the West Sayville Fire Department at the age of 16 and served as chief from 1955 to 1957 and also as the department lay chaplain. He served as a naval officer and was awarded several medals, including the American Theatre Medal and the Victory Medal.
