VIDEO: Town Eyeing International Flights At MacArthur Airport

Officials takes the first steps in their goal to expand service beyond U.S. borders.

Islip Town officials, with the assistance of Rep. Steve Israel, D-Huntington, are taking the first steps toward their goal of bringing international flights to Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma.

The Congressman, along with Town Supervisor Phil Nolan, airport Commissioner Teresa Rizzuto and local business leaders, gathered at the airport Monday to lend their support to the initiative.

Currently, the airport is served by two domestic carriers, Southwest Airlines and US Airways, but offers no flights that land outside the United States.

While town and airport officials are in the early stages in their efforts to bring international flights to Long Island MacArthur, the process of getting federal approval could be lengthy.

At a Monday press conference to discuss the possibility of international flights at the airport, Nolan said it would likely be two years or more before the first international flight would touch down at the airport.
