Tim Mazzei Seeks Fifth Term on Brookhaven Board

Republican incumbent's campaign for Town's fifth council district focused on reining in taxes and completing ongoing projects.

As he makes a run for a fifth term on the Brookhaven Town Board, Councilman Tim Mazzei said he wants to continue playing a role in keeping town tax from rising while also completing work on several projects.

The Republican, a lifelong Blue Point resident, is being challenged by Democrat , who also calls Blue Point home. The winner will represent the Fifth Council District that includes Blue Point, Patchogue, Medford and Holtsville.

During his eight years as a councilman Mazzei said Brookhaven has successfully reined in taxes; something he would like to see continue.

“Town taxes only comprise probably six percent of the entire tax bill. Although that doesn’t represent a big portion, it’s still important to keep taxes low and not increase them,” he said. “We don’t have any intention of raising them this year either.”

Mazzei said deciding to run for a fifth term was an easy. He points to his involvement in hyper-local improvement efforts, both short- and long-term, as the driving force behind his desire to seek re-election.

“I chose to run again because I still love what I’m doing, I love doing things for the community I represent,” he said. “I’m interested in completing a number of projects we’ve been working hard on.”

One such project Mazzei hopes to see to fruition is the government purchase of old green house property on Maple Ave. in Blue Point. He is working with Suffolk County and the property owner to facilitate the government purchase of the property, which he hopes to then designate as open space.

In addition to the securing open land, Mazzei says a halt to this development project will save residents the potential pains of additional traffic, increased student population, and higher school taxes.

“Designating this area as a parkland will alleviate this [potential] problems and accomplish the goal of keeping this property as an open space,” he said.

Mazzei was new to office when council districts were formed in 2003.  He said the prior lack of representation for the area that currently comprises the fifth district is what initially inspired him to run.

“For years and years, there was no one that came from that district on the town board,” he said, and added that representing a district on the board allows members to cast votes in the interest of your particular constituents, and not for the town at large.

A majority of Mazzei’s career has been spent in the public sector. He served as a former Assistant District Attorney for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office, and as Bureau Chief of the Homicide Division; he volunteered by serving on the Bayport-Blue Point School Board. His work in the private sector is based in Blue Point as well.

He has operated a local business, and is partner at the Blue Point law firm, Mazzei and Blair Attorney's at Law.
