Find out who's running against who in Brookhaven and Islip, and on the county level.

Islip and Brookhaven Town residents will head to the polls Nov. 5 to vote on a long ballot listing state propositions, local town races, county seat contests as well as a slew of judicial races.

In Islip, there are two town council races pitting Republican incumbents Trish Bergin Weichbrodt and Steve Flotteron against Democratic challengers George Hafele and Astrid Fidelia.

In Brookhaven voters will elect a supervisor as well as several council seats.

Incumbent Republican Supervisor Ed Romaine is being challenged by Democrat Vivian Viloria-Fisher.

The local council district position, the 5th District for Blue Point voters, is one currently held by Blue Point resident Timothy Mazzei, R-Blue Point, who is being challenged by fellow resident Mike Miller, D-Blue Point.

Mazzei has been serving on the town board since 2003, and according to Newsday, says he has been heavily involved with the Ronkonkoma Hub development and the revitalization of East Main Street in Patchogue. Mazzei cites his experience dealing with Brookhaven Town’s issues over the past 10 years and would like to continue that work.

Miller is a high school physical education and health teacher in Mattituck, and according to Newsday, moved to Long Island in 2008. Miller said he is running because of concerns about a lack of accessibility to council members, and would not take a salary his first term if elected. Miller reportedly would like to lure businesses into the district with tax breaks, with a goal of lessening the burden of school taxes on homeowners by increasing the tax base.

On the county level, longtime incumbent Legislator and West Islip resident Thomas Barraga is unopposed in his quest for a fifth two-year term in the 11th district.

The county legislature election for voters between West Sayville to Blue Point is the 8th District seat vacated in September due to the passing of longtime incumbent Democrat William Lindsay.

Lindsay’s son Bill, a Democrat, is seeking election to his father’s seat and is being challenged by Republic Anthony Musumeci. Here is a link to an article about the candidates’ background and goals if elected.

Polls open Tuesday at 6 a.m. and close at 9 p.m.
