Talk Back: Is Teen Text Law Too Tough?

New law brings new license penalty and license points.

The fact that young drivers are apparently texting way too much these days has prompted Governor Andrew Cuomo to enact a new law that stipulates a 60-day license suspension when caught texting or using a handheld cellphone, according to a Newsday report.

That's in addition to current fines for such infractions.

A second conviction in six months brings even harsher penalties and the new law makes improper cellphone use a five-point license penalty, equal to reckless driving.
