Sayville Beach Closed By Health Department

Bacteria levels found to be above acceptable criteria.

Sayville Beach has been closed by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services after finding bacterial levels in excess of acceptable criteria.

According to the Health Services website, the bacteria enterococci was the indicator and the water quality in tests taken Tuesday and Thursday were found to be “poor.”

It was not immediately known what caused the rise in bacteria levels, but Sayville was hit by heavy thunderstorms on Wednesday and steady rain on Friday.

For the latest information on affected beaches, call the Bathing Beach hotline at 852-5822, contact the Department's Office of Ecology at 852-5760 during normal business hours, or visit the website at www.suffolkcountyny.gov/health and under “Our Mission,” “Our Environment,” and click “Beaches.”
