Repair Work to Start on Fire Island Walkways

It’s been almost a year since super storm Sandy wreaked havoc on Fire Island walkways and repair work by Brookhaven Town is expected to begin this fall and be completed by next summer, according to town officials quoted in a Newsday report Friday.

Work will focus on walkways in Davis Park, Cherry Grove, Ocean Bay Park, Fire Island Pines and Water Island, according to Dan Losquadro, town highway superintendent.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrant called the project an “important step” in the state’s efforts to recover from the devastating storm, according to Newsday.

Federal funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will reimburse 90 percent of the project’s cost, about $4.2 million, according to the report.

According to Newsday, the walkway repairs are in addition to a $700 million federal project focused on protecting the South Shore from storms and dune restoration work.
