Fire rescue personnel at were joined by fire fighters at four Islip Town fire departments recently to conduct a fire prevention drill at the airport.

The fire fighters, along with airport personnel, cleared fire roads on the airport’s 1,340 acres that are critical to preventing advancement of brush fires, airport officials said.

Using specialized equipment called “stump jumpers” the fire fighters knocked down trees and other heavy brush deep in the wooded areas on airport grounds.

The drill included members of the airport’s fire rescue team and volunteers from Bohemia, Holbrook, Holtsville and Lakeland fire departments. A Suffolk County Police Department helicopter provided aerial coordination.

“The drill was very beneficial to the airport in that it allowed us to clear several fire access areas in a single day and also, thanks to these great volunteers, open an additional access roadway,” said Teresa Rizzuto, commissioner of Aviation.

Tax Rolls Now Available Online

Islip Town’s tentative tax assessments are now available online as part of an effort to give residents access to “vital property information,” town officials said.

Using an address search, information for any town property can be found, including assessed property value, acreage of the property, current tax exemptions and the property’s garbage, sewer and school districts.

“Hundreds of people request property information from the town every year, whether they are shopping for a new home, looking to open a business, or simply inquiring about their own property information,” said Phil Nolan, Islip Town supervisor. “Making this information available online will increase efficiency and transparency, and help homeowners and businesses get the information they need.”
