LIRR May Suspend Service Sunday Ahead of Hurricane Sandy

Railroad issues statement on potential shuttering of services starting at 7 p.m. Sunday.

The MTA has issued a statement that it may shutter LIRR service way ahead of Hurricane Sandy's arrival, as early as Sunday at 7 p.m. due to storm threat.

Here's the statement on its website:

"MTA has begun planning for an orderly suspension of service if Hurricane Sandy continues to bear down on the area. A decision on whether to suspend service will be made Sunday. If the decision is made, LIRR would suspend service at 7 p.m. Sunday. MTA's Hurricane Plan is designed to secure equipment, protect customers & employees before sustained winds of 39 mph reach the area. The process must begin hours in advance of the storm's arrival, as rail cars must be pulled from service & stored safely."
