Islip Town to Hold 9/11 Ceremonies

Events at Town Hall, MacArthur Airport will honor the memory of those who lost their lives a decade ago.

With the 10th anniversary of 9/11 approaching Sunday, Islip Town will mark the occasion by holding two ceremonies to honor those local residents who lost their lives in the terror attacks on the World Trade Center.

On Friday, Town officials will gather at 9/11 Memorial Park in front of at 5:30 p.m.

A steel beam recovered from the wreckage of the World Trade Center will be unveiled. In addition, the names of Islip residents who lost their lives will be read aloud. The Central Islip Choir will close the ceremony.

On Sunday, a “solemn ceremony of reflection” will be held at Long Island MacArthur Airport’s passenger security checkpoint, which will be temporarily closed, beginning at 8:15 a.m. A large American flag will be draped across the checkpoint.

The ceremony will include noted bass baritone Ron Meixsell performing the National Anthem and performances by Sayville High School cellist Kyle Tieman-Strauss — an All-State musician — and the Suffolk County Police Pipe & Drums Corps.
