Islip Notebook: Triathlon Benefits Wounded Vets

More than 300 participants run, swim and bike at the Bay Shore Marina.

More than 300 triathletes from across Long Island participated in the TrIslip Sprint Triathlon at Bay Shore Marina Park.

Organized by the Town in conjunction with EventPower, proceeds from the event went to Hope for the Warriors, a national non-profit organization that provides support for wounded service members, their families and families of those who died in combat.

“Providing a competitive, fun event, while also benefiting such a worthwhile cause is incredibly rewarding,” said Councilman John Edwards, who also raced in the event. “It was great to see such an enthusiastic response from the community.”

Founded in 2006, Hope for the Warriors has seen significant growth in the number of individuals served as well as the number of programs offered.

"We were so inspired by the support from the Town of Islip at TrIslip,” said Ella Claney, Event Coordinator for Hope for the Warriors. “Our wounded service members were not just honored that they were being recognized, but that they were invited to athletically compete alongside so many amazing New Yorkers."

Town Demolishes Olde Lamplighter

Using its recently passed blight legislation, Islip Town demolished the Olde Lamplighter Inn in Sayville. An animal hospital will be constructed on the site.

The legislation charges a fee to property owners that are considered blighted using a point system. Properties that exceed 100 points are fined either $2,500 annually for residential properties or $5,000 annually for commercial properties. The Olde Lamplighter Inn was served with a notice of blight in the spring.

“This property was a thorn in the side of our residents for decades,” said Supervisor Phil Nolan. “The Town’s blight law will continue to ensure that other eyesores meet the same fate as the Lamplighter.”
